How to Prepare Your Furnace Before Winter
Fall Maintenance Checklist
Before the temperatures drop, a few simple steps can prevent you from dealing with a no-heat emergency on the coldest night of the year.
- Replace your air filter. A clogged filter starves the furnace of airflow, causing it to overheat and short-cycle. Check it monthly and replace every 1–3 months.
- Clear the area around the furnace. Keep at least 3 feet of clear space and make sure nothing is stored on top of or leaning against the unit.
- Check your vents and registers. Make sure all supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or boxes.
- Test your thermostat. Switch it to heat and verify the system kicks on. If it doesn't, check the batteries and circuit breaker first before calling.
- Schedule a tune-up. A professional fall tune-up catches problems early — worn parts, gas pressure issues, cracked heat exchangers — before they become emergencies.
